KAHALUʻU MA KAI – KAILUA KONA, HI
Big Islandʻs Place of Intelligence: An Educational Hub by Kamehameha Schools
Kahaluʻu Ma Kai is a culturally and historically significant 22-acre shoreline property owned by Kamehameha Schools. Once the site of the Keauhou Beach Hotel, it has been restored and transformed into an educational and cultural center that preserves five ancient heiau, traditional poʻo, and vital Hawaiian learning grounds.
Formerly a highly prized residence for Hawaiian royalty (aliʻi) and an intellectual training ground for leaders, the property serves today as a place for Native Hawaiian ʻāina-based education, STEM programs, and cultural exchange.
Restored Sacred Sites: The complex is home to five significant heiau: Mākoleʻā, Keʻekū, Hāpaialiʻi, Kapuanoni, and Hale o Papa.
Kahaluʻu Ma Kai was known historically as a Hālau Lololo, which translates to a “place of deep knowledge, intelligence, and high-level learning”. In ancient Hawaiʻi, this coastal area in West Hawaiʻi was not just a royal residence, but a specialized training ground where the aliʻi and leaders went to master the complex skills needed to govern effectively.
All the ruling chiefs of Hawaiʻi Island resided at Kahaluʻu at various points in history. It served as an elite political and intellectual hub.
- Training Ground for Leaders: Aliʻi did not just inherit power; they had to earn the right to lead by proving their intelligence and capability. Kahaluʻu was where they studied statecraft, military strategy, resource distribution, and oral history.
- Mastering Sustainability: Chiefs learned how to manage the land and sea using the ahupuaʻa system. The area itself was a model of abundance, filled with natural wells, fruit trees, and exceptionally rich fishing grounds.
